In the traditional rags-to-riches model, the protagonist goes through the many trials of the story to emerge intact, leave the confines of the society in which they found themselves at the start, and go off to achieve their dream and enjoy success. Reviewing the film for The Chicago Sun Times, Roger Ebert praised the film for essentially not having a third act. While the rendering of the landscape is not the most groundbreaking for its subject matter, it is effective in getting across what might be called the prison of familiarity: the main characters are desperate to get out of their situation in some way, but always end up staying because this world is the only one they know. More pertinently to this film, he shot Amores Perros, and the film benefits from his gritty use of handheld cameras and claustrophobic lighting choices. He's assisted ably in this regard by Rodrigo Prieto, who was Oscar-nominated for his work on Silence and Brokeback Mountain. That's not to say, of course, that Hanson's rendering of 1990s Detroit is completely unremarkable or inconsequential. Hanson, by contrast, keeps Eminem and his character's journey front and centre, with the setting increasingly fading into the background. Both Mathieu Kassovitz and Karel Reisz are interested in the social conditions which could have produced their leading men, whether it's the banlieues of Paris or the post-war streets of Nottingham. While there are some clear narrative similarities - the protagonists are all three young men, who undertake some form of manual labour to get by and feed their respective vices - there is a big difference in emphasis. Just as the mod movement in London in the 1960s provided an outlet for young men who laboured away in factories by day ("the dirty jobs" of Quadrophenia), so the rap battles provide an outlet for the all the frustrations, ego and anxiety experienced by these young men.īy focussing on the plight of disenfranchised, alienated young men in an unforgiving landscape, the film merits close comparison with La Haine, and by extension Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. Even if you're not a fan of rap music (and I include myself in this category), the film gives us a sufficient grounding in the world of mid-1990s Detroit to understand why this music has a pull on young men, and why Rabbit would feel the need to prove himself in this way. and therefore didn't feel the need to rationalise the hagiographic reputation it accorded him.Ĩ Mile's first success is that it triumphs where Notorious sank without trace. This is the mistake made by Notorious (no, not the Hitchcock film), which assumed that its audience would already be experts on Notorious B.I.G. But because this is a period piece, which takes place in a very specific context within the history of American music, that simply isn't an option. Because of the prevalence of rap and hip-hop in mainstream culture, it would be easy to assume that the paying public would go along with every aspect of the world that is put in front of them. One of the first challenges that any film about music has to do is to explain the appeal of the music and its surrounding culture to an audience that may have no familiarity with it. While not perfect, or Curtis Hanson's finest film, it is a gritty and absorbing project which still holds up very well after 15 years. Instead, we get a very fine performance in a film which avoids some (but not all) of the cliche-ridden pitfalls of the rags-to-riches story. On the back of The Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show, which brought him both hit singles and critical praise, it would have been extremely easy for him to coast on a project like this. Sometimes you get even both phenomena in the same film, as was the case in Ken Russell's Tommy: Tina Turner excels as the Acid Queen, while Eric Clapton (with both a real and a fake beard) is barely credible.Ĩ Mile came at a time when Eminem was at the peak of his powers. Sometimes this can work to the film's advantage - for instance, David Byrne in True Stories - but for every figure like David Bowie who can serve a role, there are a dozen singers who simply can't fit in. Even if the film in question isn't already a vanity project about the musician's life (Glitter, Purple Rain, Moonwalker and so on), there's a tendency for singers to either play themselves or needlessly draw attention to their presence. When musicians turn their hand to acting, the results can often not be pretty. She acts as steward, guiding artists careers to fruition and encouraging them to take control of their markets. Apart from that, the batteries inside the AirPods are tiny so while integrating the health monitor feature might as well increase the size of the battery, nevertheless, given Apple’s reputation for style over substance it is unlikely that we see any battery changes on the device. Large groups of units would fail to move when ordered because they would all try to push through each other. The path-finding was ridiculously bad in that game though. MobiusArcher: Taking out an entire map filled with enemy bases with just three guys was super awesome. Regardless, it plays like Crusaders, not A War of Heroes. It was a while back though, so my memory could be off. I know that sounds a bit odd for them to number the games that way, but I seem to recall an interview with the developers that said its a sequel to Crusaders. Kingdom Under Fire 2 is actually more of a sequel to them, and not the original Kingdom Under Fire. I would love to put in words just how awesome those games were, but I cant. The XBOX games Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders, and Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes were something else though. Once you get far enough in the game that your heroes don't need much of a bodyguard, the game does turn far more awesome that it is frustrating. The game was filled with awesome, but it was also jam packed with frustration. There were were times where I would order a small group of guys to move slightly to the side, and the go off to do something else only to find that the group decided to the long way across the entire map and through certain death at the enemy base to get there. Taking out an entire map filled with enemy bases with just three guys was super awesome. For instance, early on in the game you see a pair of children much like yourself who are scampering around in front of you. However, few games like this actively make you wonder about the nature of the challenges before you. They present challenges simply to challenge the player, to entertain him. The environment in places seems crafted simply to block the player’s progress this wouldn’t be a surprise, as thousands of games have done this. Unimaginable horrors seem to be around every corner, becoming more intense as the boy traverses the world. The most striking aspect of the world is how it is populated, both in terms of its living and non-living inhabitants. The world and those things that surround the player at all times represent the true achievement of the game, placing it far above any puzzle-platformer in history. Unlike Tetris, Limbo places the player within a darkened world of mystery and horror, where death is a constant threat from sources that the player cannot see or understand. Of course, one cannot stop at Limbo’s most basic level, as it’s not simply a puzzle game. At its most basic level, it contains only slightly more plot than Tetris, and that’s only because you get to see the person who you control. Instead, it’s simply a series of challenges to overcome. While press releases and game summaries reveal that Limbo is the story of a boy searching for his sister in Limbo, players don’t even see the sister until over halfway through the game.īecause of this, playing Limbo’s first couple of hours can feel like playing a game without a story, or even a casual game that has no intention of presenting a narrative whatsoever. The strangest thing about Limbo is that, if you’re playing it having heard nothing whatsoever about it, you’ll truly have no clue what it is about. You maybe probably shouldn’t read this if you haven’t played the game and care about things like spoilers and things. Limbo presents one of the most engaging and sophisticated stories in videogame history, and it does so without giving you a solid idea of what the hell you’re doing. Those people are, of course, missing the point. You never really know where you’re going, what you’re doing, or who you’re sharing the world of Limbo with, and because of this some might be quick to label the game’s story as lacking or even poor. Then there’s Limbo, which is minimalistic and vague in its storytelling while simultaneously offering one of the best experiences of the year, and not just because of its puzzle-solving gameplay. Games like BioShock are praised for the narratives they present, and without them, the games amount to little more than standard fare. A game’s story is seen as a necessary extension of gameplay, like the heart that resides within the body and keeps it in motion. We often speak of videogames in terms of the narratives they present. |
